In »Katabasis«, Lulu MacDonald & Maik Gräf embark on a joint journey to the depths of the sea. Instead of trying to recreate a preconceived image, the form of their trip is established through shaping the material, similar to working with sculpture. The material in that case is photographic paper, treated with various chemicals in the darkroom, resulting in “photographs” that behold questions of materiality: Fear as material, Curiousness as material, Yearning as material, Chaos as material, Anticipation as material. The book features both texts and chemigrams in a delicate environment on semi-translucent paper held together by a binding developed specifically for the book.
